Call To Serve

April 14, 2004 to
April 9, 2010

On April 9, 2004 I was given a opportunity to be a Service Missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. It has become one of the greatest calling in my life. As I look back over the 6 years of service I have worked with many wonderful ladies, met many wonderful people from all over the world and have been blessed beyond means

Barbara Despain was the Chairman of our shift. She later became the Head Hostess over the Church Office Building, then Director over all Hosting on Temple Square. Barbara has just recently been called to the General Relief Society Board. Barbara helped me with the opportunity to work at the Relief Society building as a substitute and also work the Open Houses for the General Relief Society, Young Women's and Primary Board. The Relief Society Building was a building that was built "In The Shadow Of The Temple". A place where ladies can go and learn about their callings and see the talents and beautiful gifts that women from all over the world has sent.

Marjorie Beardall lives in Syracuse, UT and she was the one that gave me the paper to fill out for this calling. She was Co-chairman at the time I began and was appointed Chairman after 5 months after I started. She was a lady that showed love to all of us. She is very kind, and loving. During her call Marjorie excepted a called in her ward as Y.W.
Secretary. She fit right in with the love of loving the Twilight Series.

JoAnna Betenson a very nice and sweet lady. She was shortly released after I was put in. JoAnna and her husband excepted a calling to be temple workers at the Bountiful Temple on Friday mornings.
Ann Marie Bittner a fun person and very nice was released in 2006 with health problems and she moved closer to her daughter in Logan.
Aliene Bowen worked until she reached the age of 94. Aliene was a hostess for 9 years. She was know for her candy she brought at Christmas time. She passed away in 2008. Aliene was also born in Price. Her maiden name was Pace. She shared her English Toffee recipe with us:
1 lb. butter
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup water

Cook in a heavy pan over high heat and stir continually until a tan color. Remove from heat and add one cup of sliced almonds.
Pour into a butted cookie sheet and spread with mild chocolate. Sprinkle with chopped nuts.
She used a 16" cookie sheet.

Gail Finlay, became co-chairman with Marjorie Beardall. She had great knowledge about Salt Lake City. She had worked at the Conference Center and shared her knowledge with us. She was a School Teacher at one time. She had also served a mission to Africa. She also could make a jumping frog and never share that knowledge with us. The children visitors loved it.

Mary Alice Hansen worked at the Church office building until she was 101. She was a beautiful lady. She was a beautician. She was all ways very well dressed. She died at the age of 103. We loved her dearly. Mary Alice had never been married. She was born in Price.

Miriam Hawkins worked at the COB for 12 years. She always wanted to serve a mission so she figured out how many hours it would take to serve a full time mission and achieved it.

Carole Ivie was Marjorie Beardall sister-in-law. They road in together every Friday. She was caring and thoughtful. She was always concern about how you were and how things were going.
Carole's mission ended at the same time Marjorie's did. They were greatly missed. We always had 2 Carole's on our shift.

Janet Jensen worked a year with me. She had been on a mission to New Zealand while there she lost her husband. She began to work at the COB and decided to returned to her mission and met her former husband. She never did return. She married and lived their. They recently moved back to Draper and I met her at the COB and the Bishops Store House. There her and her husband was serving a mission. She is also a temple worker at the Draper Temple.
LaRae Myers-Johnson was released soon after I started I did not have the opportunity to get to know her well. She lived in Layton.

Miriam Mann and I became best friends. She is the most humble person I have met. She had an opportunity to serve a mission at the Washington DC temple with her husband. He died in 2003 and she took her calling 1month before mine. After a couple of years we had the chance to ride together. She loved her family and mostly her grandchildren, alwayed said good thing about everyone, her testimony is strong, and appreciated everything in life. She is now moving into an apartment in the basement of her daughters in Woods Cross.

BJ Barbara Johnson was from North Ogden. Fun lady. She was active in her wards Single Adults. She was able to get her kitchen remodeled. We loved to here every week how her kitchen was going.

Marian Ann Peck had beautiful red hair. She was sweet and very kind. She worked with us until the closer of the 26th floor in the Spring of 2006. There she moved to the Family History Library where she was a greater and finished her mission.

Denadene Merrell was recovering from Cancer when I began. She was a very uplifting person. She also served as Relief Society President and a Temple Worker. Never complained. A great lady to emulate.

October 2004 Beardall and Findlay Chairman was made Chairman and Assistant Chairman

Shirley Rook a great grand-daughter of Martin Harris. She love working the Martin Harris Pageant. She took the time to do a fire-side in our Syracuse Ward to the youth about Marin Harris. That year our family went to the pageant. Shirley was in a car wreck during her service that triggered Parkinson. She was released 2 months after that. She was a great woman.

Betty Murray began July 2005. Very elegant lady. She was born in Canada. Her husband was a doctor and moved around. As guest came into the Church Office Building it was amazing how many people from Canada and Michigan she was able to relate too. She was very kind and loving.

Merle Ann Barrus a lady with a great singing voice. Merle sang for us during a Christmas Party, amazing. She was working a couple of shifts and felt she need to drop one. So she was with us a short time.
Bev Garr lived in California and moved to Utah after her husband died. She became an assistant Chairman to Jeanne. She was very nice, funny, and cute.

Pat Johnson not only worked at the COB, she worked at the Conference Center with special events. She was always pleasant. Pat is now serving a mission for a year at Navhoo. She left in January of 2010. She was very concern about everyone.

Ardath Koford was ERT leader for 2 years. She always had witty to say. She loved to tease. She had her small bottle of Coke at lunch, loved the green olives and most of all had the biggest hamburger. She was always a joy to be around.

Resource Committee 2005-2008 I was invited to be on the resource committee with ladies from the different buildings. What a great opportunity I had. These ladies were kind and the knowledge flowed. They welcomed me and I learned so much from them and especially Ruth Harris Chairman of the resource committee. She was organized and made you feel really important. She was later called to be over the Conference Center with hosting. At the time I met Ruth she was Relief Society President of a Single Adult Ward. Later she moved to North Salt Lake and was released and went to her own home ward. Now she is serving a mission.

April 12 2007 end of my 1st mission and beginning of my second
Marva Peterson Olsen started her mission the same time I started my second one. Marva is
from Huntington, Utah. She is a cousin to the Carlson's who were my families friend. She lived in Price and knew my Aunt Ethel. She and her family ended up in American Fork. Her husband died and during her service as a Temple worked at the Timpanogas Temple she met Bro. Olsen. He is the coolest guy. He loves to be with her and likes to be with our shift. The were married in January of 2009. I have never seen Marva so happy. The memory that I will always remember was never getting to work the West Desk with her. Our laughter over came the building so we were grounded from each other. But I will remember those times.

Sandi Ryan was co-chair with Jeane. A very proper lady. She loved visiting family in Louisiana. She took a few trips there. The Super Bowl was the high light of the year for her. She decked her self out and her home and threw a big party for her family. It was a hit. I have never seen any one like Sandi that could find any thing on the Internet like her. She had worked for the FBI and she knew how to get what she wanted.

Rosie Brimhall, worked 3 or 4 other shifts. On Fridays she worked the Joseph Smith Memorial Building and sneaked lunch in and worked with us on the afternoon shift. She also has the opportunity to work Activities on Temple square so some nights she would finish the day and go for the night. What energy she had! She was fun, kind and loving who she worked with.
